Friday, April 20, conference of Jõhvi Museum Society "Jõhvi – 90 years as a city of Estonian Defense Forces. 1928–2018". The conference is dedicated to the birthday of General Aleksander Tõnisson and the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. The presentations introduce Aleksander Tõnisson and the War of Independence in Ida-Viru County, events in the city of Jõhvi during the Second World War, as well as the history of the Viru infantry battalion and the history of the Alutaguse malev of the Defense League. Sunday, April 22, at 10 p.m., the day before the St. George's Night, the St. George's Night lights action will begin to keep the traditions and to celebrate together the most important holiday of our ancestors, to revive the practices of the old Estonians and to increase the inner strength of the Estonian people. The event is organized by Time Centre Wittenstein / Järva County Museum with the Estonian Defence League, the Pärnu Museum and the Estonian Agricultural Museum. From the Paide Tower, the beacon fires will be sent out to four directions in 100 km distance: Tallinn, Pärnu, Tartu and Rakvere. About 1200 firemen are involved. On Monday, April 23, at 8 p.m. the St. George's Night fire will be lit in Jüriöö park. This year, 675 years will pass from St. George’s Night Uprising. In order to commemorate the struggle for the freedom of the Estonian people, we will meet in Jüriöö park and will light the St. George's Night fire. The journey of the fire begins at the Tori Estonian Warrior's Church, from there it is brought to Tallinn Town Hall where a torch is being fired, that three riders bring to the Jüriöö park. Wednesday, May 2, at 6 p.m. Screening of a documentary "Kalamaja – Possibility of a Wooden Town" and discussion at the Information Centre for Sustainable Renovation (Väike-Patarei 5, Tallinn). Filmmaker Rasmus Bullerby, or Marko Raat, is present who talks about the background of the filmmaking in the late 1990s and the story of his next wooden houses. "Kalamaja is today what most people did not believe back then," recalls Marko. In parallel with the monitoring of the "different" renovating process of Väike-Patarei 5, the film offers a future vision of Kalamaja which is now, 18 years later, fascinating to see. The film is accompanied by several interesting stories. The film won the European Nostra Award. It was repeatedly shown on Swedish national television but ETV refused to show it, the reasons were blurry.
