Lecture of Barbara Welzel, PhD "Reading Things in the Hanseatic World"

What is the role of things in works of art? How do the things depicted in artworks "speak" to the world beyond images? What information about the world outside images do we need to reconstruct the "period eye", the historical cognition?

The talk will probe the perspective of the material turn in artworks which were created and mediated for the Hanseatic world and for trade.

Professor of Art History Dr. Barbara Welzel (TU Dortmund University) focuses her research on the Netherlandish art of the late middle ages and the early modern period, on court-culture and on the history of collecting. She has dedicated herself to the interdisciplinary research of the medieval city of Dortmund. She is notable for her cooperative work and projects in various fields within and outside of the university.
